In this blog, you can hear about Dzigbodi’s experience in our Community Engagement Programme, where student consultancy teams assist a charity in addressing an organisational challenge. Dzigbodi was a consultant for the Grandmother Collective and reflects on how she arrived at this experience below!

Embarking on a master’s degree often signifies a decisive step towards career clarity. Yet, the true impact of the knowledge gained within those walls remains elusive until experienced first-hand. My journey began with a desire to delve into development work and an uncertainty on how to proceed to be of value in this industry. This uncertainty led me to seek guidance from the career services, which eventually led me to the Volunteer Centre.

I wanted to explore the role of research in development as I had been learning the importance of defining or identifying a problem in my programme. I found myself at a crossroads, lacking practical experience. Encouraged to seek assistance from the Volunteer Centre, I hesitated not knowing how to navigate this new terrain.

Booking a meeting with the Volunteer Centre was effortless, allowing me to align it seamlessly with my schedule.

My first meeting at the Volunteer Centre was in the LSE Life section of the library. Engaging in an open and candid dialogue with a representative, I articulated my aspirations, fears, and uncertainties regarding my career path. The session seamlessly transitioned into a practical exploration, with the staff aiding me in identifying volunteer opportunities and roles that aligned with my objectives. Furthermore, I discovered how to leverage the career services website to scout for additional volunteer opportunities. I also learnt of upcoming community engagement initiatives managed by the Volunteer Centre.

This single encounter reframed my LSE experience from one of bewilderment to one of purpose and direction. Subsequently, I seized the opportunity to volunteer with an organisation in London, immersing myself in a field I aspire to contribute to. Participating in the community engagement program further enriched my journey, providing invaluable real-world experience and fostering amazing connections with like-minded individuals and mentors. Armed with newfound skills and confidence, I transitioned from uncertainty to preparedness for the workforce.

Volunteering transcended the confines of academia, affording me a glimpse into a world beyond my own. It served as a catalyst for self-discovery, unveiling skills and affirming my potential to contribute to both society and my chosen industry. All it took was a single meeting to set this transformative journey into motion.

I encourage everyone to volunteer or visit the volunteer centre even if only to learn more about yourself.
