In this post, Jean-Paul Warmoes, Secretary at King Baudouin African Development Prize, is excited to find out which development innovations will be unveiled through the 2014/15 edition of the prize.

The relationship between academia and development in Africa is as old as the continent itself.

From LSE students debating the consequences of the Boer War at the turn of the 19th Century to current studies on the transmission of HIV/AIDS in the Horn of Africa, this synergistic relationship has resulted in incredible breakthroughs in the areas of health, social justice, and agriculture, and beyond.

At The King Baudouin Foundation, we’re excited to turn the page to begin a new chapter in 2014 because we can’t wait to find out what development innovations this year will bring in Africa. We believe that a cornerstone of achieving progress in Africa is to shine a light upon the continent’s development initiatives and those who lead them, for the world to see.

That’s why, every other year, we award The King Baudouin African Development Prize to individuals or organisations who are making an outstanding contribution to development in Africa.

The King Baudouin African Development Prize supports pioneering development work and promotes social progress on the African continent. Beyond its monetary value of 200,000 euros, the Prize offers its winners unique opportunities to increase their visibility and promote their cause to international audiences. Past winners include Bogaletch Gebre for establishing a community-based movement for social change and Dr. Denis Mukwege for his contribution to building an integrated health care system in the Eastern Congo.

I wanted to share news of the opening of nominations for the 2014-2015 King Baudouin African Development Prize with you so that you can share in our mission of spreading the word about development leaders and their initiatives.

Know of a groundbreaking project or a ground shifting leader? Let us know! We invite you to submit a nomination via the easy-to-use electronic form for any contacts or organisations whose work in Africa would make them a strong candidate for this prize. The deadline for nominations is 28 February 2014.
