LSE funding for UK undergraduates

Are you an undergraduate prospective student worried about finances at university? With the cost of living in London rising each year, funding for tuition and living expenses is a concern for many students. LSE’s own funds help it provide generous financial support to eligible students each year, helping them enjoy university without the additional stress of money worries.

Here are all the options available for UK students:

LSE Bursary

The LSE Bursary is for UK undergraduate students and is dependent on their household income. Bursary recipients have free choice over the use of their funding, with the amounts given ranging from £500 up to £4,000 each year. Applicants for Student Finance in the UK are automatically considered for the LSE Bursary and, unlike the former, the LSE Bursary doesn’t have to be repaid.

LSE Accommodation Bursaries

Living in LSE halls of residence is a great way to make friends as a new student and to live in central London at a subsidised cost. The LSE Accommodation Bursaries aim to help UK students from lower-income households to meet these costs. The amount received depends on the number of students awarded the bursary as well as annual household income but in 2022/23 it ranged from £500 to £2,500 per year. Similar to the LSE Bursary, a separate application isn’t required as you’ll be automatically considered when you apply for Student Finance and book your accommodation before the June deadline.

LSE Scholarships

LSE is able to award numerous scholarships each year thanks to donations funded by private or corporate bodies. These are firstly considered on the basis of financial circumstances and then academic merit. Unless otherwise stated, completing the LSE Undergraduate Scholarship Application means you’ll be considered for any eligible LSE scholarships. Among the scholarships available is the Uggla Family Scholars Programme which offers seven scholarships every year for UK students from underrepresented backgrounds, including financial support and mentorship throughout your studies at LSE.

Care Experienced and Estranged Student Bursary

Students who are care experienced or estranged can find access to higher education challenging, so the LSE Care Experienced and Estranged Student Bursary aims to provide eligible students with further support. This bursary can be combined with additional LSE financial support and doesn’t need to be repaid, providing £1,000 per year for a maximum of 4 years of study. If through UCAS you share with the university that you’ve been in care or estranged from your parents or carers, you’ll automatically receive the bursary after enrolment at LSE.

Useful tips

Don’t be afraid to ask questions! Get in touch with Student Recruitment to help clear any doubts about the funding available and the application process. Leaving things to the last minute rarely works, so make sure you check deadlines for scholarship applications as well as eligibility requirements to ensure you get the most out of LSE funding. Different evidence is required for different funding options, so don’t forget to include the correct documents to avoid any delays.
