The current cost of living crisis has created a more urgent dependence on food banks than ever before. Food bank Trussell Trust reports that over the last half-year, over 300,000 people have had to begin using its services for the first time. Looking to the winter, they expect to face the greatest demand yet at around 7,000 food parcels per day, creating a state of emergency where donations are no longer keeping up with the level of demand.

A group of LSE Student Volunteering Ambassadors are running a food drive to support those who are especially struggling during the current crisis. They hope to collect items such as jam, tinned custard, tinned fish, tinned fruit and cooking oil, as well as non-food items including shampoo and sanitary towels. They will be collecting donations on campus at the Faith Centre and Alumni Centre from the 29th of November, coinciding with the Volunteer Centre’s Giving Tuesday. The donations will be given to the Trussell Trust food bank in Waterloo. We hope this initiative will provide some support during the most challenging period faced by UK food banks in history.
