Are you a Disabled student looking for a four- to eight-week volunteering opportunity between the middle of July and end of September 2023?  Are you unsure about charities’ degree of experience and commitment to inclusion and/or how to approach adjustment requirements in a professional setting?

Consider joining the Summer Volunteering Scheme 2023!  Applications are open until 21 May.

The LSE Volunteer Centre, in collaboration with Viki Chinn, an LSE Careers Consultant for Disabled Students, have collated a fantastic set of volunteering opportunities presented to us by charity partners with an expressed commitment to enhancing accessibility.  We collaborate with charities with expertise in this area.  We also collaborate with charities that seek feedback, advice and support concerning disability and inclusion.

The LSE Volunteer Centre and Viki provide you with a safe space to talk about the volunteering roles and adjustment requirements.  We manage the recruitment process via written applications and a round of interviews.  We are on-hand throughout the summer to provide support if required.  From 2023, we will also be offering volunteers the opportunity to meet up as a group in a social setting (optional) or be connected with other participants on the scheme who are volunteering at the same charity (optional).

‘I’ve loved taking part in this scheme and it’s definitely helped me to develop my CV and make me a stronger candidate for the roles I would like.  The team have been so supportive the whole way through, and it’s really helped my confidence in asking for accommodations and being open about my disability in the workplace.  I also found it really useful to have something positive to do with my time as I take my next step and begin my job search.’ (2021 student volunteer)

The scheme’s roles for 2023 reflect the broad range of volunteering roles the LSE Volunteer Centre offers:

  • Discover Volunteer – Churchill War Rooms
  • Discover Volunteer – HMS Belfast
  • Discover Volunteer – Imperial War Museum London
  • Human Resources Admin Volunteer – The Fairtrade Foundation
  • Office Volunteer – Carers UK
  • Volunteer Baby Bank Sorter and Packer – Little Village
  • Volunteer Fundraising Assistant – The Hunger Project UK
  • Volunteer Project Assistant – Dialogue Society
  • Volunteer Research and Marketing Assistant – IPWSO
  • Volunteer Retail Assistant – Vision Foundation
  • Volunteer Marketing and Social Media Assistant – Team Up (1-2 roles)
  • Community Canteen Kitchen Volunteer – Be Enriched (4 roles): Why not sign up with a friend and travel to the canteen together?
  • Sustainability Research Volunteer – People and Planet (4 roles)

These roles present the chance to make a social impact, learn more about a cause you’re passionate about, gain experience in the non-profit sector, make useful contacts, develop new and existing skills, meet new people, learn more about London and the UK, and experience communicating adjustment requirements in a professional setting.

You can read more about the roles and apply via CareerHub.  You can find out more about the Summer Volunteering Scheme on our webpage.  We’ll also be holding an information event on Zoom on Thursday 4 May 2023 at 1-2pm.  Alternatively, please reach out to volunteer@lse.ac.uk to correspond via email about the scheme and/or to schedule a meeting at a different time.

We look forward to your application!
