LSE Press are delighted to announce an opening for the position of Chair of the Editorial Board. The Press looks forward to receiving applications from professional colleagues in the LSE research staff community for this important School role.

This is an exciting leadership position which signals a new chapter for LSE Press as they move into a new phase of expansion.

As the Editorial Board moves into its second 3-year phase of operations from September 2023, the new Chair will lead the Editorial Board through its next three years, ensuring the commissioning of an ambitious social science publishing programme with highest standards of academic integrity.

LSE was founded with the purpose of understanding the causes of things and for the betterment of society. Today, LSE is a world-leading social science research institution with global impact, where scholarly values are upheld, and societal issues are publicly debated from a diversity of viewpoints.

Open Access publishing – making important scholarly work accessible to everyone – therefore accords with LSE’s role as the global convenor of influential debates on these critical issues.

Launched in May 2018, LSE Press supports the promotion of high-quality social science research and enables wide public access through the use of open, digital publication methods. Through rigorous peer-review and the use of innovative digital approaches, the Press promotes the widest possible engagement with social science research through publishing work from both LSE and external authors. LSE Press publications demonstrate wide public engagement and growing the Press is one of the key objectives of the LSE Research Strategy.

To date, the Press has published 11 books covering a range of topics across the social sciences, including politics, philosophy, economics, media studies, and international relations, with over 76,000 book downloads at the time of writing.

Alongside their expanding book list, LSE Press publish 5 journals including 3 new titles and 2 titles which moved from existing publishers.

The Chair of the Editorial Board will oversee the Press’s commissioning strategy to ensure that the quality of scholarly work published by the Press meets the high standards of LSE. The Chair of Editorial Board will work closely with and report to the Director of LSE Library who is Managing Director of the LSE Press and will meet regularly with the Press team based in the Library.

This position will be suitable for a member of the School’s professoriate with an internationally recognised research profile who has strong knowledge of open access publishing and academic review, a commitment to upholding the highest standards of accountability, equity and transparency in academic publishing and is committed to working constructively and collaboratively with academic and professional services colleagues.
