NATO is to deploy new media citizen journalism in its propaganda war against the Taleban in Afghanistan. As I revealed exclusively last week NATO is now prioritising new communications technology in a bid to win hearts and minds world-wide.
Sarah Hartley has a good take on the risks involved and the cultural problems for ‘mainstream’ old media organisations like the military when they adopt these high-tech tactics.
Some people would see something sinister in killer machines like NATO using new media. Personally, I think it’s a great idea. New media is by its very nature more open, networked and citizen-centred. That can only be a good thing for both the armed forces and the people of Afghanistan.
Wait for the first attack on NATO forces captured on a NATO-issued camera. Or the first bombed wedding party… Double-edged sword IMHO.
