A Day in the Life of an LLM Student

This blog was written in early December 2021.

Welcome to a day in my life during week 9 of Michaelmas Term as an LSE LLM student. This was a mostly typical Tuesday for me, so hopefully, you’ll gain an insight into what it’s like to be a student at LSE!

8:00 AM

Luckily, this term I don’t have any early morning classes meaning that I usually wake up naturally around this time. After convincing myself to get out of bed, I ate breakfast and got ready for the day.

9:30 AM

I sat down at my desk ready to do some work around this time. After checking emails to see if anything needs to be done or responded to, I checked my calendar and to-do list for the day and got on with some tasks. On this day, I needed to prepare some readings for my seminar later on and some pre-recorded lectures to catch up on for a different module.

11:45 AM

Having worked on these tasks for a while, I went to the kitchen to prepare myself some lunch. I ate and had a little lunch break before beginning my afternoon. I simply continued reading for my class until had to head to campus.

2:15 PM

It was then time to pack my bag and leave the house, to head to campus for my in-person seminar at 3 PM. I walked to the station to get the bus to Holborn and grabbed a hot drink on the way to keep me going.

3:00 PM

After chatting to my classmates for a bit before heading into the seminar for trademark law, I tried to take in as much information as possible. I would usually leave myself more time to complete and engage with the class readings and not start on the day of the seminar. However, I had been very busy with assignments for the past couple of weeks.

Still, I enjoyed the class since trademark law is very interesting and applicable to day-to-day scenarios, so I took a lot away from the seminar.

5:00 PM

Right at the end of the seminar, I had to dash off to work. This year, I am working for LSE as an Event Steward, helping to carry out the public lecture programme at LSE. While I don’t work every week at the same time, I do complete one or two shifts every week, so it is not a totally unusual addition to my day.

8:30 PM

After the lecture was complete, I was free to go home and did so straight away. I got on the bus and stopped for some food on the way since I was really hungry by this point. After eating and winding down, I headed to bed as it had been a long day.

I hope you enjoyed getting an insight into what a (mostly) typical day in the life of an LLM student can look like. Granted, my days at university vary a lot, and I certainly don’t get bored as a student in London!
