Day trips can be an ideal escape from the hustle and bustle of London. They are also cheaper, require less planning, and don’t necessarily need luggage. Here’s a rundown of some accessible and rewarding destinations just a train away while you are studying abroad at LSE.

Brighton: perfect seaside town

Your train journey to the beaches of Brighton starts with prices from £10. The journey spans about an hour, offering picturesque views along the way. Once you’ve arrived, get a cute brunch at a café in ‘The Lanes’ or explore the vibrant streets. Brighton is also adorned with attractions perfect for exploration. Take a stroll along the iconic Brighton Palace Pier and play some arcade games, bask in the sun on the pebble beaches, or immerse yourself in the architecture of the Royal Pavilion.

Oxford: dark academia paradise

Frequent trains from London Paddington or Marylebone stations offer a swift hour-long journey to Oxford. Tickets are often available from £20. Once in Oxford, you can experience traditional British fare at ‘The Trout’ or savour international flavours at the Covered Market. If you’re a Harry Potter fan, the city is steeped in history and dark academia vibes. Take a tour of one of the colleges of the University of Oxford, visit the Bodleian Library, or find the spots that supposedly inspired J.K. Rowling’s book series.

Cambridge: quaint and charming

Trains departing regularly from London King’s Cross transport you to Cambridge in just an hour. Tickets are also priced around £20. Punting is a must-do in this beautiful town, and you can choose between a self-guided option or a tour guide who will give you historical and fun facts about the various colleges of the University of Cambridge. The city is a treasure trove of architectural wonders like the Mathematical Bridge and the Bridge of Sighs. Be sure to visit the stunning King’s College Chapel to end off your day.

Dover: more than cliffs

From London St Pancras, embark on a journey to Dover in just under two hours, with tickets starting at £20. Take a scenic hike and marvel at the breath-taking White Cliffs of Dover, where you can faintly see France across the water on a good day. The history held within Dover Castle’s ancient walls is also worth perusing, and you will get magnificent views of the town from high above along the way.
