In September 2023, I joined LSE as a master’s student in the MSc Social and Public Communication programme. With more than 15 years of non-profit communications experience, my decision to return to university was carefully considered. I began looking for a course that aligned with my experience in communications, and the Department of Psychological and Behavioural Science, ranking as one of the top disciplines to study in LSE, met my requirements.

The last three months of my master’s studies at LSE has been a transformative journey. The programme’s curriculum offers a nuanced exploration of the dynamic relationship between social psychology and communication. From dissecting the principles of persuasion to understanding the psychology behind public opinion, the course equipped me with the tools to navigate the complex landscape of communication strategies.

This academic endeavour was more than just a return to learning. Having taken a career break to pivot, the initial nervousness transformed into a sense of empowerment. Whilst my years of professional experience solidified my profound understanding of the practical aspects of communication, the last few months rewired my approach to critical thinking. The programme not only honed my ability to communicate effectively, but also provided a profound insight into the transformative power of social psychology in shaping different perspectives.

The faculty members that are distinguished experts in their respective fields, were pivotal in guiding me through the academic terrain. Their mentorship went beyond the confines of the classroom, offering insights into the practical applications of social psychology in communication. This personalised guidance enriched my academic experience and provided a bridge between theory and real-world application — understanding social psychology in communication not only provides a depth of knowledge, but also goes beyond the traditional realms of education.

In just a short span, the MSc Social and Public Communication programme at LSE was an enriching experience, blending my professional experience with specialised academic insights. And, my journey continues, promising not only a degree, but a holistic preparation for the evolving landscape of communication in our interconnected world.
