Guest Blog: Volunteering with IPWSO for the Summer Volunteering Scheme for Disabled Students

In this blog, we hear from Agnes, the Communication and Membership Manager for the International Prader-Willi Syndrome Organisation, and their involvement in LSE’s Summer Volunteering Scheme for Disabled Students. If you are interested in their volunteer opportunities or the Scheme, keep reading!

The International Prader-Willi Syndrome Organisation (IPWSO) works to raise awareness of a rare disease called Prader-Willi syndrome. We were established in 1991 by a group of parents and professionals who were frustrated by the lack of information available and saw the need for international cooperation to help put the spotlight on best practice, research and guidance to improve the lives of people with PWS.

In 2023 we now have a small staff team in the UK and work with our Trustees and Advisers based all around the world to continue to raise awareness and in particular to tackle inequality in access to care and treatment.

Through our work we aim to empower people with PWS and their families to access the tools they need to live a happy and productive life. We do this by producing information and guidance, running events, amplifying the work of national PWS associations, international advocacy and by providing access to free PWS diagnosis for those who need it.

We know that students at the LSE have a very international outlook, just like us. We also know that many of you are interested in using your own experiences and skills to help others and that volunteering is at the heart of many student activities.

Volunteering has many benefits, both for the organisation and the student. We are part of the LSE Summer Volunteering Scheme for Disabled Students because we believe that volunteering should be accessible for everyone. We hope that you will be interested in finding out more about our work and applying to the scheme for a summer role with us as a Volunteer Research and Marketing Assistant.

You can find out more about us by following IPWSO on social media or by visiting our website.
