Interested in volunteering and want to learn more about opportunities on campus? There are lots of voluntary opportunities going on here at LSE this academic term if you’re wanting to stay close by, including ongoing opportunities with areas of LSE itself, as well as the Volunteer Centre’s one-off events. Keep reading to hear more about some ways you can get involved with volunteering right here at LSE!

Ongoing opportunities

LSE offers a variety of ongoing volunteering opportunities with different areas of campus. If you’d like to learn more about volunteering outside of LSE, check out CareerHub for a full list of ongoing volunteering opportunities from charities all over!

LSESU Charity Shop: The LSESU Charity Shop needs enthusiastic volunteers to brighten their lively campus hub. Join them to create a welcoming space while fundraising for the Student Union’s chosen charities!

SAMS: LSE LIFE is looking for second and third year undergraduate students who self identify as neurodivergent to become student mentors and can share their experiences of academic life as a student at LSE with new, neurodivergent first year students. You may help them with things such as establishing a good work life balance, understanding where to find academic support at the School, or where the best spots to study on Campus are. You will meet with them around three times a term and will be trained and supported throughout your time as a SAM by LSE LIFE.

LSE Language Centre Volunteer Scheme: Are you interested in meeting new people while gaining experience in leading discussion groups or 1-2-1 sessions? Do you enjoy talking about your culture and language? Volunteer to help other students become fluent in your language and know more about your culture. The Language Centre is looking for volunteers to run two programmes: 1) Conversation Circles: You will be leading a small conversation group for 1 hour for 5 consecutive weeks. 2) Bitesize Speaking: 1-2-1 support (1 hour divided into 4 slots of 15 minutes each per student). The learner will come to the session to practice something specific.

LSE Sustainability and ResLifeIn collaboration with LSE’s Sustainability team, ResLife is holding a Halls Litter Pick at Burgess Park, Southwark. This opportunity is open to all LSE students living in halls.

September and October One-off Events

The Volunteer Centre run a one-off volunteering programme to help you fit volunteering around your studies and other commitments. Just sign up beforehand on CareerHub for anything that looks interesting to you!

Post Pals; 26 Sept 1:30-3:30pm: Help ‘post a smile on a child’s face’ by sending a card or letter to seriously ill children and their siblings. You can read a bit about the children, choose to whom you’ll write, and then make a card or write a letter to help make them smile and feel less isolated.

World Mental Health Day; 10 Oct 11-12pmThis week to commemorate World Mental Healthy Day, the LSE Volunteer Centre are offering the chance to spread kindness, while taking part in some creative art therapies! Letters Against Isolation is an organisation dedicated to tackling feelings of isolation which might come with the experience of living in a care home. Volunteers can get involved in this powerful global movement by designing and writing letters for care homes. There will be plenty of guidance for letter writing, inspiring templates and crafty materials. Join us by getting creative and making your own letter which will be sent as part of the Letters Against Isolation campaign.

Knitting for Syria; 23 Oct 2-4pm: The LSE Volunteer Centre is getting creative in our one-off volunteering program. Come along to learn how to knit and create squares to contribute to a blanket to make a huge difference to the lives of internally displaced people.

If you are already inspired to volunteer, check out one of our other ongoing opportunities or book a one-to-one with David Coles, the Volunteer Centre Manager if you have more questions. And why not follow us on Twitter, and Instagram to stay up-to-date with our events and opportunities and read our blog for more volunteering tips and stories.
