What is a Student-led Volunteering Project?

Do you have a passion for an area of social change, outreach or civic engagement you would like to engage in? Perhaps you’d like to work in, or even create a charitable activity or organisation, supporting a cause you feel strongly about.

Student-led Volunteering Projects are the perfect opportunity to practise volunteering project management at LSE. Creating your own project gives you the opportunity to make a difference.

Whether your idea relates to an initiative supporting education, elderly people, food waste, sustainability or any other area we would love to hear from you to help you bring these ideas to life.  As an individual or a group, you can engage with community organisations, other students or charities to deliver your project.

If your idea proposal is accepted on the Student-led Volunteering Projects programme, you will receive support at every stage. From identifying partnerships, to supporting  volunteer recruitment, management and training which focuses on best practice, responsible and ethical volunteering.

You will also receive leadership training and financial support for the project, which can be put towards your activity, or building your project with social sessions for volunteers to build connections and strengthen the delivery of your project.

What SLP ideas have LSE students previously submitted?

A SLP is an opportunity to create and deliver a project involving charitable activity, civic engagement or social change you feel passionate about.

Some examples of previous student ideas include:

  • Supporting primary school pupils with financial literacy
  • Coaching community centre sports with young people
  • Launching a volunteer-led support group on campus, to help students dealing with grief and bereavement
  • Starting a gardening initiative to utilise LSE green space for growing veg and herbs

You can join the Moodle page to access the support resources for the rest of the programme.

There are so many benefits to setting up a Student-led Volunteering Project. While we can help you to make an impact within the community by setting up a volunteering initiative, SLPs are also a great opportunity for personal development.

Becoming a project leader can help you to learn more about different factors of project management and delivery, as well as taking on a leadership role. This opportunity can also help you gain an understanding working in partnerships, supporting volunteers and taking your ideas from imagination to reality.

When and how to apply

When: Project opportunities run in two recruitment cycles, with applications opening in Oct and Jan. Your project can then take place throughout the year according to your plans.

To submit an idea for a Student-led Project, please submit the project proposal form (found on the Moodle page) via email to volunteer@lse.ac.uk. Deadline for the current applications is 11.59pm November 6th 2023.

If you have any questions about SLPs, an idea you would like to chat about or just want to know more then please email a.divers@lse.ac.uk with any questions.

We can’t wait to hear your ideas for 2023/24!
