Professor Michael Cox, Emeritus Professor of International Relations and Founding Director LSE IDEAS, discuss LSE’s origins and history of interacting with the outside world.

LSE is a member of CIVICA, the European University of Social Sciences. We posed Professor Cox four questions about LSE’s evolving relationship with the world, from 1895 through the tumults of the 20th century to the modern day, taking in the political and social landscape, monumental national and international events and partnerships, such as those that paved the way for the creation of CIVICA.

Michael Cox is Emeritus Professor of International Relations at LSE and Founding Director of LSE IDEAS. He joined LSE in 2002 having previously held a Chair in the Department of International Politics, University of Wales, Aberystwyth. His most recent books include "The Post-Cold War World" (2018), a centennial edition of John Maynard Keynes’s "The Economic Consequences of the Peace" (2019), a reissue with his introduction to E H Carr’s 1945 classic, "Nationalism & After" (2021) and in 2022, "Agonies of Empire: American Power from Clinton to Biden". He is currently working a new history of the LSE titled "The School: LSE and the Shaping of the Modern World".
