Do you have thoughts about the future of press regulation in the UK? Would you like to contribute to the debate?
Following the release of the Leveson Report, the Hacked Off Campaign proposed its Leveson Bill, which implements many of Lord Justice Leveson’s recommendations for regulation of the press. Hacked Off has invited comments from the general public, and the deadline for consultation is this Friday, 15 February 2013. You can submit your thoughts on Hacked Off’s website.
Others have also drafted proposals for press reform, including proposals by the Department for Culture, Media and Sport, the Labour Party, and Lord Lester. You can find links to each of these below.
Department for Culture, Media and Sport – Draft Royal Charter
The Labour Party – Draft Press Freedom and Trust Bill
Lord Lester – Independent Press Council Bill
Hacked Off – Draft Leveson Bill
Whilst only Hacked Off has invited formal consultation, readers are encouraged to compare and voice their opinions about each proposal. As has been said, the most effective framework needs a full, open and transparent public debate.
