Specialized Organizations are intergovernmental organisations established by multilateral agreements and having specific functions with respect to technical matters of common interest to member states. Each specialised organisation enjoys ‘the fullest technical autonomy’ but are also expected to take into account recommendations from the General Assemble and Councils. Currently there are 5 Specialized Organizations:
- Pan American Health Organization
- Inter-American Children’s Institute
- Inter-American Commission of Women
- Pan American Institute of Geography and History
- Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture
The Specialized Organizations are responsible for (Chapter XVIII, OAS Charter):
- Transmitting annual reports to the General Assembly
- Establishing cooperative relationships with world agencies of the same character in order to coordinate their activities
